For my first post, I thought that it would be fun to show some techniques that i use to help me sketch animals. I picked a deer as my first animal, because I felt like I wanted to pick up kind of where I left off on my design blog. If you guys have any questions or requests, please let me know!

ReplyDeleteFirst, thanks so much for visiting and leaving the nice comment! Ok, just to clarify what I meant; Yes anatomy and the study of muscle is very important. That is a vital part of the research needed to draw both humans or animals. I usually research a particular animal's anatomy prior to any zoo visit. This is why i usually focus one one animal at a time. I try to retain as much info about the anatomy (that i researched) as possible when sketching. But the "drawing from imagination" really comes into play when you are on location sketching these animals in there environment. What i do is study them for a bit before i even begin to draw, then if i see a pose that strikes me as interesting, i try memorize the pose, then quickly sketch out the basics of that pose. once i have that down, even though the animal may have moved or altered his position, i draw from what i remembered. This is where i begin to include the anatomy that i researched. I don't want to give the impression that i am throwing out everything that the animal is giving me on information. It is just a useful tool for me to draw from memory as well as imagination. There are also many times when i cant get a good view or just a static pose of an animal. this is when i apply some imagination of a slightly more interesting pose, then using the reference of the animal in front of me, fill in the blanks about anatomy, and form. I hope that this helps?
